Old VS Young
I cam across this Article on Wired today that explains how 4 30 something games and some gaming professionals feel about younger 16 year olds playing First Person Shooters, it goes on to explain that the younger players these days are being raised on games like COD4 or Hl2 while in our youth we were playing games like Pong and Space Invaders, or Shinobi.
“We mostly play ‘Domination,’ which is a tactical game,” he says. “This requires us often to sacrifice our lives in the defense of our flag, or in the capturing of an enemy’s flag.”
“Most younger players,” he says, “are so obsessed with keeping their kill/death ratio high that they rarely play correctly in tactical games.”
It leads me to beleive and really back up what I already know, younger players dont care about tactics, on the whole all they care about is jumping about like idiots and how their death should be the last one on the team even if it means the team dies.
I think I am glad that I moved away from First Person Shooters before this really became a problem for me, and I think it cements part of the reason I will probably only play MMO's from now on in stone.
I dont mind being beaten be they 16, or 60, if their better, their better, nothing to do about it but work harder and practice more, at least in an MMO you can work on your character development, but in an FPS, all you have is kill or be killed.

Bioware talks choices
So this is probably more Olds than News but I completely missed the article when it was first published. The MMO Gamer has interviewed Blaine Christine who works for Bioware Austin and is in charge of "interfacing" with Lucasarts on Star Wars The Old Republic.
Bioware as always seem to be placing a big emphasis on the choices you make in game, both morality choices and in class choice. Bioware has stated that your experience in game will be altered not only by the choices you make when in game but also what class you choose to play at the start. Similarly alternative factions will not just be the same gameplay experience redressed with a few name changes here and there.
Having seen previous Bioware efforts to improve entire genres of game I myself am intrigued by these choices, having different experiences for different classes provides greater re-role value and a chance for a longer play experience. Also the idea of having a moral Sith or a completely immoral Jedi strikes me as something that could provide alot of interesting twists.

Star Trek Online future content
So big news this week is the launch of star trek online by all reports the American launch of the game on Tuesday went quite smoothly with only one or two slight hiccups.
The European launch is set for Friday the 5th and currently things are looking up for Cryptic's previously overtaxed server. Long queues no longer seem to be an issue and Cryptic have issued a statement that more capacity will be added this weekend.
Cryptic themselves have just posted a whole bunch of new information about up coming content which will be delivered in the coming weeks and months. New episodes include a continuation of the fight between the Borg and species 8472, a confrontation with the new Borg queen and no Trek adventure would be complete without a bit of time travel courtesy of Q

New Developer Blog.
This time we hear from one of their lead in house Quality Assessment people, their own in house testers who sit all day trying to break the game.
wrote ... Previously I’ve made the server crash by firing missiles and if you die while turning your ship in first-person mode, you will be spinning when you launch from the station. I've been able to pass the collision on any object by approaching it from a certain angle. I could place items for auction with a minimum bid amount in the duodecillion (1 followed by 39 zeros) range. Hit detection on turrets was off making them incredibly hard to hit and even some bosses have become invincible during encounters. Players would randomly end up moving at unrealistic speeds and even one of our in-space models ended up as a 3D teapot placeholder!
I would much rather hear about the actual game, but it's better than nothing I guess.
